Shoe of the Week – Mary Jane

The “Shoe of the Week” is a new project I will be running from now on every week. I will present you a shoe type and style it in three different ways to show you a variety of options to wear these shoes.

Me being the shoe addict that I am, I started very young with my love for pretty footwear. When I was about 10 years old, I would wear nothing but these cute patent leather shoes, with a little bow on the side and them making these klicking sounds with the heels that only grown up women shoes would make. I felt so much like a grown up myself when wearing them. Since then, I have been searching for the perfect shoes to complement my personal style. In the years following, I have especially adored one type of shoe – Mary Jane’s. They are the epitome of feminine footwear, being chic, but still girly and while never being too dressed up, you still always feel like a million bucks. At least I do :)

Mary Jane's

Mary Jane’s have been around for ages, since the early 1920’s to be precise. In the beginning, they were mainly designed for children and they got their name from the first well-known carrier of this particular shoe style. Mary Jane, the sister of Buster Brown from the correspondent cartoon that was first published in 1902. During the 1920’s and the Charleston era, they had their first outing for women and since the 1950’s have become a popular fashion accessory for the ladies. They are typically designed with low heels, a round and closed toe cap and a single strap with a buckle across the ankle. The usual style would be in patent leather.

I have had several different pairs in these past years, but this dark purple pair has been my favorite for a while. It is not a classic model of Mary Jane’s, but it still fits well into the description. As you can see, the weather was not the best, but I braved the rain and took these different outfit shots.

For a fancy dinner

Wear it together with a nice dress or like in my case a pretty blouse and a pencil skirt. A pretty hairdo, lipstick and some fancy accessories and you are ready for a night out with your guy.

What I wore

Blouse, Belt & Skirt: H&M
Tights: Esda
Pearl Necklace & Clutch: Thrifted
Bracelet: Pierre Lang; gift from my Grandmother
Lipstick: Nivea Colour Passion “Sepia 06”

For a date at the movies

Wear a cute flower dress or another pretty pattern together with a pretty, but comfortable cardigan. I wore this dress with my black jeggings, as it is quite short and the weather is still too cold. I also paired this outfit with cute accessories, like a headband and a small shoulder bag.

What I wore

Dress: Lindex
Jeggings: Gina Tricot
Cardigan: Bon Prix
Headband: Claire’s
Handbag & Necklace: Thrifted
Lipstick: Nivea Colour Passion “Sepia 06”

For a shopping tour with the girls

For a long day of shopping the best to wear are your favorite pair of jeans. Pair that with a bright colored shirt and a pretty scarf and you are done. The poncho is great for windy weather and skipping between stores or in my case to keep off the rain.

What I wore

Poncho: Thrifted
Shirt & Scarf: H&M
Jeans: Long Fashion
Lipstick: Nivea Colour Passion “Sepia 06”

I hope you liked this first edition of “Shoe of the Week” and I would love to hear your suggestions for the next shoe style. What would you pair your Mary Jane’s with?
