FBFF - my Blog Tech

Katy of ModlyChic is hosting another Fashion Beauty Friend Friday(FBFF) and this week it is all about the blog technology. She says that so much of what we bloggers do is all about the tools that we use. Technology certainly makes what we do easier, even if it is sometimes a major pain.

1. What are the tools you use to blog?

Those have to be devided into several categories

Blogging in general

I am a Blogger girl. Have been using this provider from the beginning, as I am no geek when it comes to webpages and it helped me create a blog easily and without having to know HTML programming. I have been quite happy using Blogger for the last year+ and I think, I will stay here for a while longer. Wordpress is appealing, but I have difficulties with adapting my old habits and as long as the provider serves my needs, I will stick with it. I am a loyal sheep :)

Apart from that, I read the blogs that I follow via Bloglovin. I do have google friend connect and am subscribed to several blogs, but I have also all of those on my Bloglovin.

To support my Blog, I am also using several websites - Flickr for uploading my photos, youtube for videos, Polyvore for making and uploading collages, simplylinked for Linkup posts and Disqus as a commenting tool for the blog.

Photography

I got my SLR last year for Christmas and it has been a revelation. I always have had a good point and shoot camera, but a SLR has been in my dreams for years. Since I bought it 14 months ago, there has been rarely a day that I haven't taken any pictures and I think that shows: The camera has been worth every penny. I got a Canon EOS 500D with the traditional 18-55mm lense and an UV Filter. Pictures are really important to me and I don't like to blog photos with a low quality. To maintain this, I also use a Tripod and a remote control for some shoots to have more stable pictures.

I work on my pictures with Picasa, Photoscape and Gimp, but would love to get another software, like Photoshop.

Technology

My Laptop is the main tool I use for blogging. I write all my posts on it, save my photos on it and do all the research for each post. It's already a bit older, but has served me well through my year as an intern in Finland, studying for all my finals and writing my masters thesis. I hope it still survives for a while until I have a decent salary and can buy a new one.

My phone (HTC Desire Z) is my Nr.1 info source when I am out and about. I got internet everywhere I go and can check mails, blog comments and new posts via bloglovin. It's very convenient and highly addictive :)

2. What technology item is on your wish-list?

Well, there are lots, but thethings on my list for blogging, and related to that photography, are

{source 1, 2 & 3}

The Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM lense, which is probably THE most used macro photography lense out there. I have read tons of reviews on it and even though its' smaller (and cheaper) brother, the 1.8 is praised as well, I want to go for the middle class lense here to hopefully have a bit more quality as well.

As a little extra for my macro loving heart, I am also thinking about buying a set of close up filters/lenses as well. They are cheap and have a super cool effect (as seen here) for only little money.

My last big wish for my camera would be an external flash that will make a nicer lighting during shoots in the dark, but is less brisk and hard on the models. I  still have to research on those, but it is the least important right now.

Another big thing would be getting a decent program for working with my pictures. Photoshop and Adobe Creative Suite are my preferred ones.

3. Through the barrage of posts, tweets, pics, poses, messages, etc...how do you avoid becoming a slave to the constant infiltration of information?

I think I have found a nice balance and try to keep my daily reads to a minimum. Other blogs are my main information source. i rarely look for new ones right now, but get inspired by the ones  I am subscribed to. I just skip through the posts on bloglovin first and open the ones that sound interesting. I read through those and pin pictures I like. Some blogs I follow maily for the pictures and some I do read thoroughly. Those are also the ones I comment on. When I don't have a lot of time on my hands, I skip reading blogs for a while and only sort through my bloglovin to unmark the uninteresting ones.

I love Bloglovin! Definitely prefer it over Google Reader. I have the same camera and I have the ƒ1.4, but my autofocus broke after a month and a half, so it has to get fixed :( Otherwise it's a nice lens, although I can't figure out if it was having autofocus problems or if it just isn't that good of a lens with a remote.

thx for the great info. I hope that this won't happen for mine. Been saving for a while and almost have the money together now. Let's see how it goes. I guess it is much better than the f1.8, so I will go with the higher quality version.
