This weeks Friday is all about how the place you are living or currently reside can influence your wardrobe choices. Fashion Beauty Friend Friday is all location and their ways of changing our wardrobe.
I live in Germany, more precisely in the state called Saxony close to the eastern border next to the Czech Republic. My city is average in size, but can't be compared to any of the fashion cities such as Berlin, Munich, Hamburg, Cologne. Even though we got a University in town, it's a technical one and the 12.000 students really raise the age average, which is close to 48yrs. There are predictions that my city will be the senior citizen capital of Europe at 2025. Nice future, right? (add sarcasm here)
2. If you had to describe the overall mode of dress for where you live what would you say?
The fashion is very average. I guess we got all the major retailers (H&M, Zara, Vero Moda, Orsay, the likes) here. So most of the young girls wear that. Bright colors are difficult, you always get the looks when wearing those! So it is nudes, black, brown, maybe some colorful accessories. Very boring.
As I am a 50s/60s fan and a lover of vintage, life in my city and shopping for that matter is quite hard. I frequent every flea market and the couple of second hand stores, but most of my big thrift or vintage finds are made online or when I am out of town.
We recently (2 yrs ago maybe) got a TK Maxx and now also got some designer clothes, thank goodness!!!
3. Do you fit in with the status quo around you or do you break the mold?
I think, I break the mold a bit. 50s and 60s style is my favorite. I tend to dress more into that direction, but try to keep it low profile. The last two seasons have helped stack up on those outfits, as midi skirts and 50s style got back in fashion. I feel that I blend in a bit more now, but it wouldn't matter really. Through blogging and reading other blogs, I started feeling a lot more confident to wear the clothes I love no matter what.
4. If you have lived or traveled to another part of the country/world did your clothing choices evolve?
Definitely! I have lived in NYC after high school. I always tell this story, because my love for fashion really evolved there. I went there as a Goth, wearing all black, but mostly boyish clothes. The selection in my city was still very limited and I didn't belong. In NYC, I really started buying clothes (I felt like Carrie of SATC sometimes!) and went home with pink shoes :)
When I moved to Helsinki (and one other city) in Finland for 1.5yrs, my style became more concrete in the 50s department, but I think it was not only the country and its' style, but the opportunities there and me growing up and building a wardrobe. Second Hand is really big there and the Rockabilly style is very much in fashion. The options were huge and living in a capital also made a lot more things available.
5. If you had to describe your style by naming a specific city, what would you be?

Love hearing about your style transformation. I feel like I went through the same thing when I moved around but I think it also had to do with getting older.
Love your style as well - it totally fits you. :)
Ahhh New York is such a great city for fashion, isn't it? I went through a style transformation, too-- when I moved to Japan for study abroad in college. I started wearing dresses and skirts and heels every day!
I love you with rockabilly style hair! So pretty!
thx for the compliment. I definitely agree, growing up has a lot to do with finding your personal style.
