Shoe of the Week – Brogues

I am a grad student, but have been working part-time in the business world for several years. Outfit choices are limited and shoes need to be classic, comfortable and work appropriate. I have discovered brogues, semi-brogues and boots with the well-known stitching a couple of years ago and have been wearing them ever since. Currently I own one pair of half-boots, one pair of loafers and one pair with heels.

During the last year, this shoe style has become more and more popular, which makes it a lot easier for me to find nice additions to my selection. The shoe style is just so versatile it can be worn with almost everything. What has been limited to men’s wear for several years is now fashion appropriate for women as well and can be found in every major shoe store in various designs.

Brogues are originated in Scotland and Ireland and were first designed as an outdoor, country walking shoe for men. Over time the fashion changed and made them appropriate for almost every occasion, including business. Brogues, or Oxfords, are often made of leather, but in recent years can also be found as canvas or leather sneakers, high heeled women’s shoes or else. Most Brogues can be categorized in one of four different toecap styles. Most common are the full Brogues or Wingtips. This style has the popular stitching in form of a “W”.

For a visit at the flea market

Wear something comfortable and with layers. Outdoor flea markets can include erratic weather conditions with wind and sun, but also rain. Be prepared with a sweater, scarf and an umbrella. A skirt is easy for flea markets as there are no changing rooms and you might find some great pieces, but want to be sure about the fitting.

What I wore
Dress (as a skirt): H&M
Cardigan: Primark
Shirt: Gina Tricot
Belt: H&M
Tights: Esda
Shades: C&A

For a fancy Birthday party

A Birthday party is a great excuse for dressing up. You can never go wrong with a little black dress. This cute pencil dress can also be worn for a business meeting, but works very well for an evening event as well. Just pair it with a belt and colored trench coat.

What I wore

Dress: C&A
Belt & Trench: H&M
Tights: Esda
Lipstick: P2 Pure Color “Park Street”

This simple jeans and Shirt combo is enhanced through a black long blazer and high-heeled brogues. Together with a studded belt, the outfit is evening appropriate and works well at a bar.

What I wore

Pants: Long Fashion
Shirt & Blazer: Sepällä; Helsinki
Belt: Thrifted
Lipstick: Catrice Ultimate Color “Pink me up!”

I was tempted to participate in this when you first sent the email to the FBFF group, but to be honest I didn't know what 'Brogues' meant. I have always referred to the shoes you are wearing as 'oxfords'.
I love your first outfit the best. Love the graphic tee with striped cardi and the thin belt. Very cool.
